Peripheral Nerve Stimulation

Get Back to Where You Need to Be.

A Powerful and Effective Approach to Pain Relief

Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is one of the innovative treatments we offer at Cutting Edge Integrative Pain Centers to eliminate severe, chronic pain. A form of neuromodulation, PNS is an extremely safe and effective way to relieve a variety of severe neuropathic pain conditions, including neuropathy, neuralgia, low back pain, neck pain, nerve pain and more. Most PNS procedures are performed as an outpatient basis with a local anesthetic, allowing patients to avoid side effects common to prescription drug use, such as excessive sedation, clouding of the mind and chemical dependence.

If severe nerve pain is impacting your quality of life and other treatments fail, peripheral nerve stimulation may be an option for you to get back to where you need to be. Dr. Landrum specializes in this type of care and has successfully administered PNS treatments to numerous patients, who are now leading pain-free lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS)?

Peripheral nerve stimulation is a form of neuromodulation pain treatment in which a wire-like electrode is surgically placed next to one of the peripheral nerves, a network of nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord. PNS devices deliver rapid electrical pulses that feel like pleasant, mild tingles and have the ability to disrupt nerve pain.

What is neuromodulation?

Neuromodulation is the alteration of nerve activity through a stimulus ( electrical or chemical) to specific sites in the body to help restore physical function or relieve pain symptoms. Non-invasive techniques that we use are: QEEG, Neurofeedback, Auditory Visual Entrainment, Heart rate variability training to affect the Brain’s control & effects on pain and function. Invasive techniques include: (traditional, high-frequency, dorsal root ganglion) spinal cord stimulation and peripheral stimulation ( Bioness Stimrouter ).

How does Peripheral Nerve Stimulation work?

PNS treatments typically follow a two-step process. During the first step of the process, the electrode is connected to an external device that the patient can control. If it is found that the externally-controlled electrode helps to relieve the patient’s pain, the temporary electrode system is replaced with a permanent electrode that features an internal power supply, similar to a pacemaker.

What conditions can PNS successfully treat?

If medications and other therapies fail to relieve your chronic, severe pain, you may be a candidate for peripheral nerve stimulation. PNS has been successful in relieving pain caused by:

  • Nerve Injury
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
  • A Variety of Neuralgia
  • Chronic Headaches
  • Low Back Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Pain Following Hernia Surgery
  • A Variety of Neuropathies
  • Pain Following Hernia Surgery
  • Postamputation Pain
  • Postthoracotomy Syndrome

What is Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome?

Chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is classified as a rare disorder by the Food and Drug Administration, affecting upwards of 200,000 people in the United States.
