Frequently Asked Questions

What is minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery is performed using a few tiny incisions and specially designed surgical tools that fit through the incisions. Your surgeon has an excellent view of the surgical site using microscopic video cameras that transmit magnified images to a monitor.

Traditional open surgery uses one long incision, cutting through all tissues, including muscles, to gain access to the surgical site.

By comparison, minimally invasive surgery causes little trauma. In minimally invasive spine surgery, the muscles are gently pushed aside without being cut, so they don’t need time to heal.

The benefits of minimally invasive surgery include:

  • Quicker recovery
  • Less blood loss
  • Less post-operative pain
  • No muscle damage
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Minimal scarring

If your pain requires surgery, consider minimally invasive surgery at Cutting Edge Integrative Pain Centers.

What conditions are treatable with minimally invasive surgery?

Most surgeries that were once only open procedures can now be done using minimally invasive techniques, including spine surgery.

These are just a few of the conditions that may be treatable with minimally invasive surgery:

  • Herniated disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spinal instability
  • Compression fractures
  • Spinal deformities

If you have one of these conditions, consider minimally invasive surgery at Cutting Edge Integrative Pain Centers.

What are interspinous spacers?

The spinous process is a bony projection on the back of each vertebra. The processes create ridges you can feel along the back of your spine.

Muscles and ligaments that support your spine attach to spinal processes. These bony structures also create an opening so that nerves can enter and exit the spine. You can experience pain if one of these nerves becomes pinched.

If a nerve is pinched, Dr. Landrum and the team at Cutting Edge Integrative Pain Centers can take pressure off the nerve — relieving your pain — using minimally invasive surgery to implant an interspinous spacer, or a spacer placed between two spinous processes.
