If you’re skeptical about regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy, we can’t say that we blame you. Stories of bad actors and fraudulent therapies appear in news headlines from time to time, which creates a negative viewpoint on even those of us who are providing genuine, effectual regenerative medicine. But with all the negative stories, we want to tell a success story of regenerative medicine — the story of an NFL quarterback who relied on stem cell therapy to get him back on the gridiron.

Athletes of many sports and levels of competition have turned to regenerative medicine and Regenexx-certified clinics to treat and manage their pain. Just one example is Tennessee Titans Pro-Bowl quarterback Ryan Tannehill. In 2017, Tannehill was playing for the Miami Dolphins when he suffered a non-contact injury to his left knee. As he limped off the field, Tannehill would have been fearing the worst; and, unfortunately, the worst had come to pass as he had torn his ACL.

What could he do? Ryan would undergo traditional surgery to repair the ligament, but when he needed help fully healing the ligament and rebuilding the cartilage around it, he visited Dr. Chris Centeno’s Regenexx clinic in the Grand Caymans for stem cell therapy. His cells were put to work as his knee was rebuilt.

Ryan Tannehill is not only back to his best, but he’s reached new heights! In the 2019 season, Tannehill had the NFL’s highest passer rating (117.5, also a new high mark in Tennessee’s franchise history) and achieved career highs in passing percentage, yards-per-pass, and threw only 6 interceptions (a career low). But what about his knee? Tannehill rushed 43 times in the season—a similar count to before his injury—averaging 4.3 yards-per-rush and scored four rushing touchdowns. With his help, the Titans were able to make it all the way to the AFC championship, in which they played in an exciting game that resulted in a heartbreaking loss to the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

The Titans may not have played in the Super Bowl, but Ryan Tannehill’s career is back on track and his future is bright, due in no small part to the science of regenerative medicine.
